Activities:

  • Using things like power points and posters that include no words and only pictures are an excellent way to have them use nonverbal aids and visual images to enhance communication. For example, you could have students make posters about what they have to do to reduce their ecological footprint. Another example is a slide show where they have to show what they have done, using pictures of themselves, to reduce their footprint. Then, a paper on what they learned by just looking at the pictures could be written. This will not only help to understand if the students are able to recognize nonverbal aids as a communication device, but as well it will help the students become more analytical viewers who are able to think deeper about the picture and not just see what's "on the surface".
  • Another activity is to complete a research topic on a current event. Have students write an essay explaining how each component of the ecological calculator affects the overall calculation and what they can do to reduce their footprint.
